A Logical Landing Spot For DeAndre Ayton
A good big man can be hard to find, and the Phoenix Suns may have to start looking for one if they can’t come to terms with DeAndre Ayton. Ayton is a former first overall pick and has been a key contributor for the Suns, especially as they’ve gotten back in the playoffs. Ayton averaged just over 17 points and 10 rebounds in the 21-22 season. While the Suns want to keep the big fella, his contract demands so far have been too much for them to be willing to accommodate. There have a been a few teams thrown out there that could be a good fit for him. But, one team in particular has not been mentioned. This team needs an upgrade at center and the 23 year old from the Bahamas would be a perfect fit. The New Orleans Pelicans have entered the chat.
Why This Makes Sense
Folks, Jonas Valanciunas is limited. He doesn’t offer much defense for the Pelicans and he is now 30 years old. The New Orleans center depth behind Valanciunas isn’t terrible, but it isn’t great either. What they need is an instant impact player. New Orleans was a playoff team but ranked 19th in offense, and 20th in defense. Ayton is a day one starter who can help in all facets of the game. The only question is can the Pels make the salary cap work for them. Addressing their biggest need will go a long way. In addition to the Pelicans, the Utah Jazz (since Gobert wants out), Portland Trail Blazers, and the Toronto Raptors come to mind in terms of teams that need an immediate upgrade in the big department.
Will He Go Back To Phoenix?
Based on the dynamic between the two parties, it seems very unlikely. It’s also somewhat confusing that the Sun’s don’t seem in a hurry to negotiate or even make a counter offer. The team does not view Ayton as a top player and subsequently refuse to pay him like one. While that may be true, do they really think an aging JaVale Mcgee and Bismack Biyombo can give them the same production? Spoiler alert, they can’t. DeAndre Ayton is a restricted free agent, so keep that in mind. That means Phoenix can match any offer he gets and force him to stay on a deal they want him for. If that plays out, Ayton will most likely not play for the Suns again. In that regard, he might be better off going elsewhere.
