Cale Makar Has Become The Best Young Defenseman In The NHL
There was a record breaking 33 trades on deadline day, but Cale Makar didn’t have to worry about this job security. He is firmly entrenched in the Avs top defense pairing and isn’t going anywhere. If you haven’t seen his goal against Chicago, do yourself favor and check it out. This kid is so fun to watch, and he’s made some history which we’ll get into right now.
Historic Streak
Cale Makar broke a Colorado franchise record for consecutive games with an assist by a defenseman. His 13 game assist streak broke the old record of 12 set by franchise legend and GM Joe Sakic. That puts Makar at fifth all time in NHL history passing Bobby Orr who had 11. Here is how the top five looks now:
Paul Coffey - 17
Brian Leetch - 15
Bobby Orr - 14
Phil Housley - 14
Cale Makar - 13
That’s pretty elite company right there. The streak began on February 13th and ended on March 8th. By the way, Makar is only 23.
Crazy Numbers
Makar is having one heck of a season with 22 goals and 49 assists. That’s 71 total points on the season. Plus minus to some people means nothing, but he is also a +38. In his short NHL career thus far, Cale Makar has a total of 42 goals, 123 assists, 165 points, and a +67 rating. You try not to overreact to players especially when they are this young. But folks, I have to say it. Cale Makar could go down as one of the all time greats.
