Early Analysis Of Emory Jones Transferring to Arizona State
It’s safe to say Emory Jones has not had the college career he had hoped for. He’s had to wait his turn behind Kyle Trask and was mostly used as a package quarterback at Florida. When he got his starting opportunity, it did not go well. In 2021, Jones threw for 2,734 yards and averaged 7.9 yards per throw with 19 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He had a 64.7 completion percentage. Jones also ran the ball for 759 yards and four touchdowns while averaging 5.3 yards per carry. His inconsitiences and the obvious rise of Anthony Richardson led to his transfer to Arizona State. The Sun Devils needed a QB after Jayden Daniels decided to transfer to LSU. After three years of waiting to see Emory Jones as a starter, there was more to be desired.
What ASU Is Getting
Jones is an athletic quarterback with good speed, similar to Daniels. He was mostly used as a runner with the Gators. From that standpoint, the offense doesn’t need to change all that much. NFL scouts would probably want to see more than just is running ability. They want to know if he can actually play quarterback. The arm strength is good too. His longest pass was thrown for 49 yards. Jones has shown he can throw the ball. The turnovers were big a problem. The question is can coach Herm Edwards and his staff of former NFLers take his game to the next level. Is Emory Jones more than just the typical option college quarterback? That remains to be seen.
The Future
It’s fair to assume that Jones wants to have an NFL career if given the opportunity. He’s had some good moments, but nothing really stands out. Can another year as a starter change that? Sure, anything can happen. He has two years of eligibility left. But as it stands right now, Jones is nothing special. In terms of an NFL future, some feel that may not be possible. This is a big year for the 22 year old quarterback is running out of time to make a good impression.
