Mike Miller: The Special Teams GOAT Of The CFL
Most NFL fans don’t care about the CFL, but Mike Miller is a name you need to get familiar with. Miller is a three time CFL champion winning once with Edmonton, and now twice with Winnipeg. He is not a key offensive or defensive weapon. Simply put, he is a football player. Miller is a fullback by trade, but he has made his living on special teams. Think of him as the Matthew Slater of Canadian Football.
History Books
The Blue Bombers repeat was not the only notable accomplishment for Miller. He became the all time leader in special teams tackles in CFL history passing 190 tackles. He surpassed former BC Lion Jason Arakgi. The 32 year old gunner signed an extension with the Bombers fortifying the special teams unit for at least another year. While special teams is not always brought up, everyone respects Mike Miller.
Old School
In a time where it’s all about super teams and going all in, Miller is a throwback. He knows his role and embraces it. He lines up, runs down the kick or punt, heads to the sideline, and goes out again when he needs to. He never pouts about a lack of action or calls out the team he plays for when they don’t win. Instead, he grinds and works hard for everything he wants. Miller leads by example and does his job well. He’s lasted in the league for a long time due to his consistency, work ethic, and taking pride in what he does. If you are a coach, player, or have a young athlete at home, Mike Miller should be the role model. Unheralded, unsung, but the textbook example of longevity in sports.
