Softball Spotlight: Mackenzie Donihoo
Our final softball spotlight is Oklahoma’s Mackenzie Donihoo. Donihoo is listed as a utility player for the Sooners. She took the world by storm in the WCWS flashing her skill in the field and her power at the plate. She had an average of .438 in 2021 with 45 RBI’s, seven doubles, and nine home runs. One thing we saw first hand in the WCWS was her fire and passion for the game. Whenever she hit a home run, she emphatically ran around the bases and slammed her foot at home plate. Some call it spunk, others may call her overconfident. But, it’s not overconfidence if you can back it up.
Accolades And Power
Donihoo earned WCWS All - Tournament Team honors and 2021 NFCA All-Central Region First Team honors. In the conference, she was a 2021 All-Big 12 Second Team honoree and named to the 2021 Big 12 All-Academic First Team. Donihoo tied a WCWS record for homeruns in a game against UCLA with two. She hit three overall. Her strength down the stretch helped Oklahoma as a team break the NCAA home run record.
In the field, her passion continued to show especially after an incredible catch to help the Sooners advance. She’s athletic, fast, and a complete player If you want a clutch player, look no further then #12 in crimson and cream.
Pro Softball Landscape
This officially concludes the softball spotlight mini series. As you might imagine, there is not a lot of demand for professional softball. But, it does exist. Athlete’s Unlimited Softball is the most recent opportunity. Additionally, the Women’s Professional Fastpitch League was founded in 2009 and is also an outlet for professional softball. Softball returned to the summer Olympics in Tokyo but will not be in the next rotation. Team USA opted to send mostly older players and won the silver medal. Personally, I can’t help but think that the outcome would’ve been different and the product would’ve been more exciting if they sent a younger group led by some of the stars in the WCWS. Alas, folks like us were not consulted in the decision making process. I hope women in sports continue to get opportunities, and one day be viewed as equals to their male counterparts.
