Softball Spotlight: Montana Fouts
I wanted to focus on college softball for the next few articles. I got interested in college softball after watching the Women’s College World Series last year. It’s a really interesting sport. The first player I want to highlight is Alabama pitcher Montana Fouts. Alabama was one of the final four teams in the World Series along with Florida State, James Madison, and Oklahoma who won it all. Montana Fouts was one of the main reasons why the Tide made it that far. She is one of the best pitchers in the country and put on a show in 2021.
Accomplishments
In 2021, Fouts started 32 games. She posted double digit strikeouts in 22 of them. Fouts was also named the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Player of the Year, and received conference honors. She was named the SEC CO-Pitcher of the Year and the SEC Tournament MVP. To round out her amazing year, she was a USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year finalist, and became the first pitcher in 21 years to pitch a perfect game in the WCWS. She did so against UCLA.
Additionally, she only walked eight batters all year to go along with 349 strikeouts. Fouts was named to the USA softball roster for the 2022 world games. She is one of five current student athletes on the squad, and one of two players from the 2021 WCWS on the team. The other is Oklahoma catcher Kinzie Hansen, who will be highlighted later on.
The best part is that Montana Fouts still has eligibility left after 2022. If she decides to use it, that makes Alabama a very dangerous team. After coming one game short of the chance at a championship, she will be leading the charge as Alabama looks to make another push for NCAA tournament.
