The Packers Didn't Give Amari Rodgers A Fair Chance, Now He Gets A Fresh Start
When Amari Rodgers was at Clemson, he was part of a great offensive attack with Trevor Lawrence, Travis Etienne, Justyn Ross, and Cornell Powel. Rodgers was viewed as one of the better receivers in the 2021 draft. He was selected in the third round by the Green Bay Packers. He never got a real chance as a receiver and mostly got his action as a returner. The team even traded to bring Randall Cobb back to Green Bay as a familiar face to mentor him. After some serious fumbling issues this season, the Packers decided to cut him loose. He was not out of work long as he was picked up by the Houston Texans. The 23 year old still has plenty of upside, he just needs an opportunity. He should be able to get that and a whole lot more in H-town.
Why This Makes Sense
The Texans need young playmakers at receiver. They are very much lacking in that department and that is part of the reason why they are 1-8-1 on the season - AKA the worse team in the league. They have high hopes for second pick John Metchie from Alabama, but he is sidelined as he undergoes treatment for leukemia. Nico Collins is a big play threat but has under 500 yards. He needs more usage. Brandin Cooks is what we in the business call disgruntled and he wanted out at the trade deadline. Cooks didn’t get his wish and made it clear he is not happy about it. One word, yikes. Expect a trade in the offseason. That makes Rodgers even more valuable to the Texans, and he should be a very important piece moving forward for young quarterback Davis Mills. Just because his old team didn’t use him the right way doesn’t mean he’s a bad player.
Keep Adding Young Players
The Texans need to keep this up. They recently picked up Eno Benjamin, a running back cut by the Cardinals in a surprising move. The run game is finally getting a boost with rookie fourth rounder Dameon Pierce from Florida. Rex Burkhead is getting older and can’t be the second option at this stage of his career. Benjamin should easily become a contributor next year. For what it’s worth, there is another former Packer looking for a new home. At the time time Green Bay said goodbye to Rodgers, they also parted ways with running back Kylin Hill. Hill was a seventh round pick in 2021 from Mississippi state best known for his speed, receiving skills, and being a playmaker in space. A combination of a torn ACL is rookie year and a bad attitude as the season has gone on led to his release.
Houston doesn’t have a running back who is a threat as a pass catcher out of the backfield. That extra dimension can take the offense to the next level - as would a legit playmaking tight end which they don’t have right now either. 30 year old Jordan Atkins has under 300 yards and the next highest at the position is OJ Howard with just over 100. I’m sorry, but what the hell are we doing here? Houston is on the right track despite the results, but they need to go the extra mile to make a team Houston can be proud of.
At least one more article will be out before the week is up. Coming up next, I’ve got something to say about the champs in LA.
