The Vegas Golden Knights Did Evgenii Dadonov Dirty
The Vegas Golden Knights tried to move Evgenii Dadonov at the trade deadline due to being up against the salary cap. The trade would have sent the winger to the Anaheim Ducks. The problem is that the Ducks were on Dadonov’s no trade list, but Vegas was unaware of that. The trade was voided by the league for that reason. For what it’s worth, the Ducks could have used him. He stayed with the Golden Knights for the rest of the season and put up 20 goals and 23 assists. This includes an overtime winner against Chicago once the deadline passed which included an absolute banger of a call from ESPN’s Sean McDonough. You can find it here. You would think that new head coach Bruce Cassidy would want a player like Dadonov for depth scoring, especially since he had little to none of that in Boston. However, that is not the case.
What Happened?
The Golden Knights successfully traded Dadonov this time (the Ducks Twitter team had some jokes about that) to the Montreal Canadiens. In return, Vegas gets the contract of defenseman and captain Shea Weber. This is the second time that Montreal has traded a captain to Vegas. The first time was when Vegas acquired Max Pacioretty in exchange for Nick Suzuki. Weber is currently battling injuries and at this time, it does not look like he is going to ever play again. Vegas wanted to get rid of Dadonov so bad, they accepted a player who may never don their jersey.
A Win For Montreal
This is a good addition for what was the worst team in hockey. Dadonov was a third liner in Vegas and could easily be the same in Montreal, or maybe even a second line player. At age 33, he also brings experience to a team with young pieces. He also played on the second power play unit. This is a player who can do a lot of things of a team that struggled in every faceit of the game in the 2021 season. Evgenii Dadonov deserves a lot of credit for taking the high road after the Vegas situation. Now he is going to a team where he is actually wanted and can make an impact. That’s all a player can ask for.
