What Comes Next For Brandon Banks?
Brandon Banks will be looking for a new team. After eight seasons with the Hamilton-Tiger Cats, the parties agreed to part ways at the start of the free agency period. Speedy B, as he is affectionately called, didn’t get as many opportunities in 2021. He had 474 yards and two touchdowns. Banks is getting older as we know, but he could still play a role for the right team. Here are some possible landing spots.
Ottawa RedBlacks
As of right now, Ottawa is not viewed as a contender. Jeremiah Masoli is heading to the Redblacks, and pairing him with a weapon from Hamilton could make business better in the nation’s capital. Jalen Acklin is signing as well. Ottawa was at the bottom of the league in passing. Banks still has some speed to his game and could help get Ottawa back in the mix.
Saskatchewan Roughriders
The Riders were second to last in passing. Cody Fajardo does a good job overall and has helped the team be successful the last few seasons. But, maybe he needs (or wants) one more weapon. The statline for his 2021 season was a step in the wrong direction in terms of turnovers. He had 14 touchdowns to go with 11 interceptions and 2,970 passing yards. Speedy B is reliable, and could be a safety outlet if Fajardo gets in a tough spot so he doesn’t have to force a throw.
Edmonton Elks
The Elks were in the middle of the pack in passing but really struggled in 2021. With Nick Arbuckle at the helm, that should bring some consistency to the passing attack since Trevor Harris really struggled. Greg Ellingson was the leading receiver on the team with 687 yards. It’s possible that Brandon Banks could take some of the pressure off Ellingson.
Out of these teams, only Saskatchewan made a playoff run. If Brandon Banks is looking for a contender, there is a good chance he ends up there. But after all, this is sports and anything can happen.
